Since graduating from Manchester School of Art in 2005, James Roper found international recognition within the Pop Surrealism movement, with solo shows in New York, London, and Barcelona. His vibrant, anime and Baroque-inspired paintings led to collaborations with Nike, MTV, and Facebook.
Roper has since moved away from the exaggerated, technicoloured imagery of his early career, however the Baroque sensibility continued within Prima Materia, a digital collage series drawing on Old Master paintings, from the Italian Renaissance through to Flemish Still Life.
This evolved into his current work, Relics of the Wild, made up of intricate digital collages crafted from his own photography of flora and fauna encountered while walking the British countryside.
Roper lives and works in New Mills.
