Claire de Ruiter
Feltmaker
Seventy pence per fleece. That is the average that a farmer gets for his wool. Claire is astonished that we have this renewable resource on our doorstep that quite often ends up on a bonfire. Through her work Claire aims to raise awareness of the beauty of British wools. You can caress the wool fibres with the most tender of touch to create a gossamer fabric or you can hurl and throw it to produce a tough weather-resistance felt. Either way it will respond by evolving into a multitude of shapes with an internal memory that never ceases to astound. Claire splits her time between teaching felt-making in schools and to adults, with working to commission and exhibiting internationally.
